Wireless connectivity is an issue currently confronting cities across the country. This isn't something that is going to happen in ten years, but rather a revolution that is going on right now. No one could have predicted wireless to explode the way it has.

We need to start thinking about wireless as infrastructure - the same way we think about water and sewer systems. Four out of five Americans say mobile connectivity is a necessary part of their daily lives. Let's be clear - mobile internet access is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Time and again, studies after study on this topic, multiple sources all say the same thing: internet connectivity NOW is an essential element of modern life. Connectivity is a critical part of private enterprise, home life and effective governance. We should be doing everything we can in our cities to encourage deployment of wireless infrastructure.

The pressing need for robust wireless infrastructure is only going to increase. It's hard to keep up with the demand for additional wireless infrastructure to serve business and residents in our communities, but the demand is going to increase further. When you think of wireless, do you just think about mobile phones? It's really much more than that. It includes water meters, gas meters, every electric meter. Just about every new car being delivered today has a cellular enabled modem on board. Traffic lights, street lights, iPhones, even iWatches.

In less than 12 months, the major carriers will start rolling out 5G in select American cities, including California. Most of us have heard of 5G. While the exact specifications still haven't been released, the overarching idea is to provide mobile data at the same speed as today's residential broadband connections. This means wireless internet on our mobile devices at just about the same speed as we have at home. This will change EVERYTHING. This is the most important trend in modern infrastructure since the mass deployment of broadband internet. Imagine a world where having a blazing fast internet connection no longer requires a hardwired connection. The enterprise and services this infrastructure will support will revolutionize the way we collect data, conduct business and go about our daily lives.

Many of us here remember the introduction of the internet to people's homes. Initially the internet was seen as a novelty. Most businesses didn't take it very seriously. Even when we got to the point where most companies had a web page, they were fairly static and there was still a lot of debate on how useful the internet was to the average person. Today, I think there is no doubt it's a critical component of modern life. Now the vast majority of companies don't just have a website, they have mobile versions of their websites with Ecommerce built in. Billions are sold through the Internet. Applications are optimized to work on mobile devices straight out of the gate. In January 2018, an incredible 95 percent of active Facebook users accessed their account through mobile devices at least once. There are dozens of similar pressures on mobile data driving the need for expanded wireless infrastructure.

Mobile video is a huge component of this demand. Video streaming is already more than 75% of total data consumption. People who are near or below the poverty line are much more likely than middle- and high-income Americans to only have one source of access to the internet.

That source is almost always a mobile phone. For them, lack of quality data coverage isn't just inconvenient, it can be the barrier between them and critical health, banking, job searching and government services. We really need to spend more time thinking how wireless infrastructure plays a key role in serving the low-income residents who live in our cities.

80% of 9-1-1 calls are made from mobile phones. Can you imagine if it was as challenging to make that emergency call as it is to send a picture from a crowded stadium? Investing in wireless infrastructure is more than just a revenue opportunity. Cities should be incentivizing its proliferation. Robust wireless infrastructure supports public safety and can saves lives.

Cities can take advantage of private sector investment to build the best wireless infrastructure at no cost to the taxpayers. This is where it takes leadership. Cities need to adapt to the world of connectivity to meet the needs of the community.

After nearly a decade of work in this arena, we still can't tell you what all the right and wrong answers are because every city has a unique profile and needs. However, what I can tell you is cities should be exploring every opportunity to provide your constituents with the infrastructure they need to improve the economy, public safety and our quality of life.

Router Speed

There are several different classifications of router speeds, denoted as 802.11 followed by a letter. The Wi-Fi speed ranks go like this: a -> b -> g -> n -> ac, with "a" being the slowest, and "ac" being the fastest.

If you're in the market for a new router, beware 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g routers. These routers are several years out of date, and unless you're getting them for rock bottom dollar, they are not worth the money.

802.11n routers tout speeds up to 300 megabits per second, and 802.11ac routers can reach speeds around 1300+ megabits per second. Now keep in mind, the maximum speed you will get depends on the internet service you pay for. Most modern homes do not have access to speeds faster than 300 megabits, so you would likely be okay with purchasing an 802.11n router. However, if you want to be future-proof, purchasing an 802.11ac router should have you set for the next several years.

Dual Band vs. Single Band

Many routers offer dual band functionality, such as 2.4 ghz signals and 5 ghz signals. Single band routers only offer 2.4 ghz signals. If you have a lot of devices or really need the extra speed, go for the dual band router. If your router use will be modest, you can save some money and stick with the single band.

Extenders and Mesh Networks

If you have a large home, you may need to purchase Wi-Fi extenders. These devices can boost the signal and reach further rooms in the house. I recommend setting up your new router first to see if extenders are necessary.

If money is no object, you could purchase routers with mesh networking technology. These routers automatically work together to create a powerful Wi-Fi network. The technology is mostly used in commercial buildings, but is now becoming more accessible for the consumer. That being said, mesh routers can be very expensive!

Unfortunately, most home users, and many business users, do not back up their systems. Moreover, many small businesses have older back-up procedures that are often ineffective for recovering files.

Of course, you can run down to your neighborhood electronics store and purchase a replacement drive for your computer, but what about your data on the failed hard drive? How important was it? Did you save it or back it up?

What to do:

If you need to recover data on the hard drive, the first thing to do is avoid trying to reboot or doing anything that involves the drive. Doing so can actually do more damage to your data.

The only irreversible data loss is caused by overwriting bits, physical damage to the drive platters or destruction of the magnetization of the platters, which seldom happens in the real world. In the majority of cases, the malfunction is caused by a damaged circuit board, failure of a mechanical component and crash of internal software system track or firmware.

In the case of actual hard drive failure, only a data recovery professional can get your data back. And the fact that you cannot access your data through your operating system does not necessarily mean that your data is lost.

As a "rule of thumb," if you hear a clicking sound emitting from your hard drive, or if the computer's S.M.A.R.T. function indicates an error during the boot process, something is wrong. The first step would be connect the remote to the drone by putting both on the same radio channel. Most of the time it is 1, 2, 3 and other times they can be much more advanced as to avoid being hacked, such as military drones. Once you have paired the devices, place the drone on a safe flat surface and I recommend standing at least 10 feet away. Now push slightly on the left throttle stick to make sure all four propellers are moving. This tells us that all motors are working properly. Do this without lifting the drone much. You should also look out for instructions that come with your specific drone as these step-by-step instructions are just the basics for flying drones.

Now you are ready to take off. This part is going to take some getting used to as controlling a drone can be difficult. Slowly continue to push up on the left throttle to accelerate up. The left throttle is also used to yaw. This is when the drone rotates in either direction while floating. The right throttle is used to move forward, backwards, left, and right. With these basics in mind it is now time to practice and get used to it. Start of small and try the simple things. Practice raising and landing the drone over and over until you are comfortable.

Once you have this part down you should feel much more comfortable. After learning this try other simple maneuvers and continue to practice those as well. Practice hovering the drone in one place. Move left/right and yaw in both directions. Once you feel comfortable with this, you can try it at a further distance. Test and how far it can go while still being able to see and control it well. In addition, make sure to check your drones manual to see how far your drone can go before losing connection. Maybe measure that distance at some point in order to get a ballpark idea of how far you can fly your drone in different locations. This is wise because if you lose connection the drone can fall to the ground and take damage. On these first couple tries also make sure to stay pretty close to the ground.

Staying close to the ground is a great idea because you are still learning your drone. If the drone falls, most of the time the propellers just pop off. This usually requires just popping the blade back into place or replace it with another one if it breaks. Most drones come with a few backup propellers, so bring these with when you go fly. Once you feel more comfortable you can try more experienced things like mixing up the movements. These skills will help capture amazing moments.
